Peony

(pee-OWN-ee) large blooms, often up to 6 inches in diameter with tissuelike petals. Many peony’s emanate a delightful scent.

COMMON COLORS:

Pink, red, lavender, purple, salmon, apricot, yellow, cream, white and bicolors

USES:

Peonys are delicate looking. They’re paper-like quality makes them dainty and graceful in an arrangement. The color variety ranges between bright bold shades and muted tones, as well as two shades at once. They’re used in all types of arrangements.

SEASON:

Peonys are in season from late spring through the summer but can be imported in the fall

FUN FACTS:

  • Very popular flower in China
  • One of the oldest used flowers in the world, known to be painted, drawn and written about since ancient times
  • The root of the peony was used in Japan for treatment of convulsions
  • State flower of Indiana
  •  Myth has it that mischievous Nymphs were said to hide the petals which made the language of peonies mean “bashfulness” or “mysterious”
